How many times have you found yourself at the end of a hectic day, knowing there’s still jobs left to do before you can go to bed, so you quickly grab whatever is to hand for tea? We’ve all done it - plus spent all of what seems like 5 minutes actually eating as we rush through to carry on with the rest of our evening.
It goes without saying that eating is important, so why don’t more of us spend more time actually enjoying it? A good way to do this is by sharing our mealtimes with family and friends. Here’s why.
1. Eating together releases those all important feel-good emotions
There really is a reason that humans have been sharing communal meals together since time began. When we eat together, our so called ‘animal brains’ receive the message that we are safe and happy, and our bodies are flooded with positive hormones and emotions. Having a meal with your family and friends is a great way to boost your mood - it also removes you from what may be your usual routine, which makes us feel like we’re doing something special.
2. Quality time together
Eating with friends and family is known to strengthen community bonds and build important friendships. Laugh, share stories, reminisce and enjoy each other’s company over a delicious course or two. Not to mention if you’ve had a bad day, you can help unload the burden by sharing it - making you feel better and knowing you aren’t alone.
3. It’s good for digestion
When you have a meal with others you tend to eat more slowly (especially if you are chatterboxes like us!). By taking your time over your food, you will feel full more quickly, and when dining out you are given a healthy portion size as opposed to those giant handfuls of pasta you may pop in at home!
We don’t know about you but we are already looking forward to our next catch up with our friends!
